Artist Statement about the Piece
"Northern California's history began in the 1850s when two gold nuggets were found in a sawmill. A 'rush' for mineral wealth brought more than 300,000 settlers in 10 years' time, marking the fastest migration this young country had ever seen.
As the 49ers settled communities within 100 miles of San Francisco, the demand for wine production grew exponentially, creating another kind of industry 'Rush.' A table laden with Northern California's golden white wines, complimentary fruit and cheese, served with a backdrop of hallmark rolling hills reminds us that although the treasure has a new name, there will always be a California 'Gold Rush'." – Eric Christensen

Artwork Description
Northern California’s Gold Rush didn’t end in the 1850s. Instead, it transformed into a new “gold rush” — the pursuit of world-class wines. The painting’s radiant Chardonnay bottles are paired with fruit, cheese, and Napa’s rolling hills, creating a scene that embodies both indulgence and refinement.
Christensen’s hyperrealistic watercolor technique brings light and texture to life, producing a canvas so vivid it is often mistaken for oil or photography.
Though the original watercolor has been sold, this piece remains available as a limited edition giclée on canvas or metal sublimation print.
Gold Rush is a masterpiece that celebrates not only California’s historic Gold Rush but also its continued pursuit of excellence in winemaking. Whether displayed on canvas or metal, this piece will add sophistication and elegance to any collection, making it a treasured homage to the riches of Northern California’s wine country.

About the Artist – Eric Christensen
Eric Christensen began painting professionally in 1992 and quickly earned recognition as one of the most celebrated Wine Country artists. Entirely self-taught, he developed a groundbreaking watercolor technique that produces images so vivid and detailed they are often mistaken for oil paintings or photographs. Christensen is the only known artist to achieve true hyperrealism using standard watercolor.
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Eric’s childhood interests included painting, botany, classical music, and gourmet cooking. These passions blended naturally into the lifelike still lifes and wine-country scenes that have made him world-renowned. After opening a successful gallery in Yountville, California in the heart of Napa Valley, Christensen ultimately chose to devote himself full-time to painting. His work has been featured in national magazines, newspapers, and on television, including Wine Country Living.
Eric’s “wine art” transcends the bottle itself to capture the romance of the Napa lifestyle — often incorporating fresh produce, flowers, and gourmet pairings into his compositions. His meticulous dry-brush technique requires over 30 layers of paint, allowing him to create luminous colors, rich shadows, and an extraordinary sense of realism.
Collectors of Christensen’s art often own multiple works, cherishing his rare ability to celebrate fine wine, food, and the beauty of natural materials in a single hyper-realistic image. His paintings are not only admired for their technical brilliance but also for their ability to transport viewers into the lifestyle of wine country.
