About the Artist — Patrick O’Rourke (1956–2026)
Patrick O’Rourke created just eight original Mouseterpieces, making the whimsical series one of the smallest and most finite bodies of work of his career. What began as a playful departure from his Romantic Realism became a collector favorite, with Patrick’s mischievous mice finding their way into private collections one painting at a time.
One collector alone acquired three of the originals—When the Cat’s Away, Date Night, and Girls’ Night Out—while individual collectors acquired Should I Light a Match?, Mouseterpiece, and eventually Off the Clock. Patrick’s beloved Pub Crawl followed a different fate. A favorite of Patrick’s that he never intended to sell, the original was lost in the devastating 2017 Tubbs Fire along with many of his treasured paintings.
That history leaves just one: I Drink Till He’s Cute, the last original Mouseterpiece still available for acquisition. Its survival offers collectors a rare opportunity to own an original from a series that can never be expanded.
 Off the Clock holds another important distinction. Completed before Patrick’s 2023 stroke, it became the final Mouseterpiece he would ever paint. After nearly two years devoted to rehabilitation, Patrick announced his retirement in February 2025, leaving behind notebooks filled with ideas and stories for future Mouseterpieces that would never reach the canvas.
With Patrick’s passing in 2026, the story of the Mouseterpieces became complete: eight originals, one lost to fire, six held in private collections, and one remaining available today. Together, they preserve a wonderfully playful side of an artist better known for the romantic land scapes of Northern California.
