About the Artist – Patrick O’Rourke
Patrick O’Rourke was known for his breathtaking landscapes of Northern California Wine Country, but tucked within his remarkable career was a very different body of work—his beloved Mouseterpieces. Whimsical, imaginative and filled with personality, the series revealed Patrick’s playful sense of humor and his gift for storytelling on canvas.
In the world of the Mouseterpieces, mischievous mice gather around fine wine, cheese and candlelight, finding adventure in life’s simplest pleasures. Each painting tells its own story through tiny details, expressive characters and carefully staged scenes. Patrick approached these whimsical works with the same meticulous attention to detail and mastery of acrylic that defined his Romantic Realism, creating paintings that invited viewers to look closer—and usually smile.
The Mouseterpieces quickly became collector favorites and a cherished part of Patrick’s artistic legacy. Yet the series would ultimately remain remarkably small. A stroke in 2023 abruptly ended Patrick’s ability to paint at the uncompromising level he expected of himself. After nearly two years devoted to rehabilitation, he made the difficult decision to retire from painting in February 2025.
Patrick passed away in 2026 following an aggressive return of cancer. The Mouseterpieces he completed now form a finite collection that can never be expanded. The characters and stories Patrick imagined live on through the paintings he left behind, while concepts recorded in his notebooks for future Mouseterpieces remain an intriguing glimpse into stories that would never reach the canvas.
