About the Artist – Alexander Kanchik

Born in 1959 in Kishinev, Moldavia (now Chișinău, Moldova), Alexander Kanchik is an internationally collected painter known for imaginative, richly colored works that blend figurative painting, fantasy, theatricality, and surrealism.

Kanchik's formal artistic training began at the Samokish Crimean Academy of Art in Simferopol. He later attended the Academy of Theatre, Stage Design and Cinematography in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), earning a master's degree in painting in 1989. His background in theater and stage design became an important influence on his artistic style, helping shape the dramatic characters, elaborate settings, and sense of storytelling that distinguish his paintings.

After immigrating to Israel in 1990, Kanchik continued developing his career as a fine artist and later worked in the United States. His paintings are populated by an extraordinary cast of musicians, lovers, dreamers, historical figures, fantastical creatures, and whimsical characters. His work combines humor and imagination with sophisticated draftsmanship and vibrant color, often creating scenes that seem to exist somewhere between reality, memory, theater, and dreams.

Kanchik's paintings have been exhibited and collected internationally, and his originals continue to appear on the international secondary art market.
