Cole was bursting with joy as he sat beside his Goldie in the back of an old Chevy pickup, watching fireworks explode across the distant navy sky. Behind them, their seven-week-old pups, Libby and Scout, slept peacefully through their very first Independence Day. From the moment they were born, Cole understood there was far more to the American Dream than he had ever imagined. In an instant, his dreams had grown beyond himself. His family was his American Dream come true.

Cole looked back at the sleeping pups and knew without question there was nothing he wouldn't do to protect them. Their safety, their happiness, and the chance to someday chase dreams of their own mattered more to him than anything he could ever want for himself. Goldie felt it too. Between the distant pops, she stole another glance at their puppies as Cole rested a protective paw across her back. Libby and Scout slept on, completely unaware of just how fiercely they were loved.

As another burst of gold illuminated the sky, Cole found himself thinking about the generations of mothers and fathers who must have felt the very same way—that some things were worth protecting not only for themselves, but for those who would come after them. Two hundred and fifty years of freedom had come with immeasurable sacrifice. Looking at Libby and Scout, Cole finally understood why. Sometimes the bravest thing we do is protect a dream we hope our children will one day be free to call their own.
