The inspiration for Moonwalkers came after Robert Bissell encountered an intricately carved ivory tusk displayed in a San Francisco Chinatown storefront. While he admired the remarkable craftsmanship, he was saddened by the sacrifice behind its creation. That experience inspired him to create his own procession of animals—not carved in ivory, but alive and thriving beneath the moon. The finished painting transforms an unsettling memory into a celebration of imagination, nature, and hope.
