The Frenchie Laundry

After months of waiting, Fifi and Pierre’s owners had finally scored the impossible—a reservation at Napa Valley’s legendary French Laundry. Naturally, the Frenchies insisted on coming along. And naturally, they misunderstood the assignment. They arrived at the famous blue door with a wash basket and laundry soap, fully prepared to participate in what they assumed would be an exceptionally fancy laundry experience.

Before anyone could explain, a hurried chef spotted the pair, handed them a basket overflowing with chef coats, aprons, and napkins, tossed Pierre a handful of clothespins, and pointed toward the wash bin and clothesline. Fifi and Pierre didn’t miss a beat. Soon Pierre was carefully hanging the chef’s whites while Fifi scrubbed and folded alongside him. Sometime during the washing, wringing, and hanging, however, Fifi quietly disappeared.

A short while later, she emerged carrying a bottle of 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay—the legendary Napa Valley wine that took top honors at the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Pierre stared at the bottle. Fifi said nothing. She simply set it beside the laundry soap and went back to work. After all, their owners had waited months for this reservation. It would be terribly rude to arrive empty-pawed.
